We are all so dang tired of being home, I know! This summer, getaways are not as available as they usually are. So we were thinking it may be nice to make your backyards a more iniviting space. Here are some ideas:
1. Add privacy and greenery with a vertical garden
Consider adding some kind of vertical garden. It can be as easy as putting up a trellis, fence or netting. This will not only provide privacy if needed but it can also serve as a back drop. There are many climbing plants you could grow on it depending on where you live that will be low maintenance. If all else fails, use Ivy – it is very hardy in most places and spreads quickly!
2. Build a Firepit
What is better than gathering around a firepit?! Great news! They can be very easy and inexpensive to build. There is no shortage of ideas if you simple google “DIY Firepits”. This is a project the whole family can be a part of and enjoy year round. Smores anyone?
3. Build a deck or a patio
Wouldn’t it be nice to have your living room outside? A deck or patio is a great way to develop a more comfortable living space out back. Even if you never have company, adding some patio furniture and potted plants can make your yard feel a little more like a vacation.
4. Lawn games and backyard camping
For a family with kids, no backyard is complete without lawn games and a tent or two. Bocce ball, badminton, bean bag toss and other games provide a fun activity for all ages. Kids will always flock to a pick-up soccer game, a trampoline, or a swimming pool. If you like the idea of camping but don’t have time to travel to a campground, set up the tent and camp in the backyard.
5. Screen movies
Does your family love watching movies together? Bring your enjoyment outside during the summer with an outdoor movie screen. You can attach a screen to any frame, fence or wall and use it with a portable movie projector, which can be found at almost any electronics store.
6. Add a Pergola
A pergola is a freestanding structure made of wood, metal, or composite that provides shade – as much or as little as you want – over your deck, patio or seating area. A pergola is a great way to add architecture, privacy and design to your space.
You might like traditional crossbeam wood planks, or prefer latticework, canvas, or interwoven fabric for more shade. A pergola in all its possible forms adds wonderful character to your backyard oasis.
7. Yoga and Meditation Area
If you practice yoga or meditation, it is not a bad idea to designate a space for it. With privacy and a flat surface, you can create a special yoga space. Consider a pergola with curtains or a deck with a wall of greenery to make it private – you’ll have a calming and relaxing destination. Even simply adding a few potted plants can make quite the difference.
8. Add a water feature
A fountain, pond, or waterfall can be made with natural or man-made elements. Stack rocks and add a pump and tubing from the home improvement store. This is a great addition to any part of your backyard.
Finding new ways to enjoy the space we have is a MUST these days. Even some small changes can make the tiniest of backyards a more relaxing retreat.
